Unsung heroes who go out of their way to help their community were honoured at the Good Neighbours Awards.
Now in its fourth year, the event, which was held at King George’s Hall in Blackburn, recognises those that go the extra mile to help their neighbours in the borough.
Guests enjoyed food and entertainment by last year’s winner Joyce Kearton at this year’s awards, which are organised by Blackburn with Darwen Council and supported by the Lancashire Telegraph.
The awards are sponsored by Community Integrated Care, Blackburn Rovers, Capita, Blackburn with Darwen Clinical Commissioning Group and McDonald’s. All provided top prizes.
Speakers included Harry Catherall, Chief Executive of Blackburn with Darwen Council, Neil Matthewman, Chief Executive of Community Integrated Care, Fran Winrow, Head of Content at the Lancashire Telegraph and Councillor Mohammed Khan, Leader of Blackburn with Darwen Council.
Councillor Khan gave out the prizes with the help of David Duncan from McDonald’s, who provided nine glass trophies for the winners.
The Mayor of Blackburn with Darwen Councillor Hussain Akhtar also attended the event to celebrate the volunteers.
Councillor Khan said:
It’s all about recognising people and thanking them for what they have been doing. A big thanks to the sponsors as well. We couldn’t put this event on without them.
More than 70 nominations were received, a record for the awards.
The overall winners included Seven year old Nathan Pugh, 17-year-old Jordan Bentley, the West End Girls Group, Janet Pearce, Fatima Dhira, Dr Mohammed Naushad, Zara Hussain and Hannah Goldthorpe. Look out for profiles of the winners in the Lancashire Telegraph in the coming weeks.
