Young people create harrowing road safety video

Over the last few months, schools in the borough have taken part in a project which saw pupils come up with radio jingles to educate both drivers and children about the importance of road safety.

Now the jingles have been turned into a YouTube video by media students at the College.

The one minute video called Decisions Change Everything tells the story of a young girl who “didn’t have time to cross at a crossing” and the tragic consequences that happen as a result.

The schools that took part include Ashleigh, St Anne’s and Pleckgate.

Filming took place outside Ashleigh school and children from all three schools were involved in the production.

Councillor Kate Hollern, leader of Blackburn with Darwen Council, said: “I was really pleased with the quality of the work the children produced. They had excellent ideas and came up with polished productions. They were really powerful. That has translated into the film, which is harrowing but really brings home the message.

“We are doing a lot to improve road safety in the borough. We are doing work in and around schools and a lot of education programmes with young people. We are also tackling bad parking, a big cause of traffic accidents in our borough.

“Through innovative projects like this, we hope to really get the message over that everyone has a responsibility to make our roads safer.”
