Local volunteers will be taking to the streets of Blackburn in a bid to clean up the local area.

As part of the ‘Your Community Your Call’ initiative the WEGs, 2020 Vision, Scouts, members of 1V Netball and volunteers at local community group One Voice will be involved in the initiative.

The litter picking exercise will take place every Saturday morning from 10am-12pm.

The idea was initiated by the award winning WEGs group who won the Good Neighbour Award earlier this year. The litter picks will begin at the Bangor Street Community Centre area in Bastwell and will progress to other parts of town.

The youth volunteers will also be conducting a sponsored litter pick for businesses. In the previous 12 months One Voice, through their various groups, have participated in three litter picking sessions and have been keen to promote this throughout the town.

Chairman of One Voice, Abrar Hussain said:

Litter picking is a way of working together in the local community to bring about a positive change to the streets of Blackburn.

Our volunteers are an integral part of One Voice and always work will a great level of zeal and vigour when they embark on projects.

This is a great opportunity for them to make a change within the community and strive to improve developments within our town We would welcome other groups to come aboard and support this community initiative.

We are optimistic that residents within the area will mirror our enthusiasm and feel encouraged to fulfill this duty and moral obligation in keeping our borough clean.”

Your Community Your Call is an impetus from the Council to reinforce efforts from all local residents to keep the borough clean and tidy.

Councillor Mohammed Khan, leader of the Council, said:

I am delighted to hear of the efforts the WEGs group. They recently won a very well deserved good neighbours award. I am very pleased they are starting a regular litter pick. We need more people like WEGs doing their bit for the community.”
