People who work in and around Blackburn Town Centre are being invited to walk to work on Friday and be part of the big Witton Park and Stride event.

Blackburn with Darwen Council’s Connect project is inviting people to take part in the half hour walk on Friday, September 26 setting off from Witton Park.

The event is being held on the same day as National Fitness Day and is a great way to encourage team building when walking with colleagues, whilst also promoting the health benefits of walking and saving money on Town Centre parking.

Anyone who wants to take part is invited to meet at Witton Country Park main entrance for a walk into the town centre departing at 8:15am and arriving in Blackburn Town Centre by 8:45am.

Those who drive to the event are able to leave their car for free at Witton Park’s main car park.

The CONNECT team hope to encourage walkers to finish at Blakeys where they have teamed-up with Macmillan Cancer Care to be part of the world’s largest Coffee Morning event.

As an incentive, those taking part will be entitled to a complimentary breakfast at Blakeys, funded through the Council’s CONNECT project. Tickets will be handed out when people register at the start of the walk. People are being asked to make a donation to MacMillan in return for a breakfast.

The event will see the Council team up with Capita, Blackburn College, Barbara Castle Way Health Centre and other local businesses to encourage people to park and stride to work from Witton Country Park.

Councillor Maureen Bateson, Executive Member for Regeneration, said:

“The main objective is to help people see that it is achievable to park their car and walk into work. People can do this any day of the week by parking their car at Witton Park for free. This not only helps people to save money but helps reduce congestion on our borough’s road s, a key aim of the Council’s CONNECT project.”

CONNECT is the Council’s scheme to encourage people to choose more sustainable forms of transport including walking, cycling, car sharing and using public transport.
