One Cathedral Square, the striking new office building within Cathedral Quarter has won the accolade of Best Commercial Property in the North West.

The Blackburn town centre building beat over 40 of the North West’s most impressive and community beneficial property schemes to receive the award from the RICS (Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors).

The annual RICS Awards, North West – held last week at in Liverpool, celebrates the most  inspirational initiatives in the region’s land, property and construction sectors.

One Cathedral Square scooped the Commercial Property award for providing tenants with both attractive and highly energy efficient offices.

Judges praised the project team behind the Grade A office development, which included BDP Architects, Eric Wright Group and Maple Grove Developments, working with Blackburn Darwen Council.

They commended the team for ensuring running costs are kept low for tenants thanks to a number of ‘green’ measures, including photovoltaic panels – which produce renewable energy – earning the development a BREEAM Excellent rating.

Chair of the judging panel for the RICS Awards, North West, Will Rees, Director at Rees Straw Chartered Surveyors said:

“One Cathedral Square is an exemplary development which is already having a positive impact on its local community and has helped to shift perceptions of Blackburn. The contemporary design has enhanced its setting, and the scheme will act as a catalyst for future regeneration of the town centre.”

“The feedback from all stakeholders has been unanimously good and it is a project the town can be rightly proud of.   The team behind One Cathedral Square should be very proud as they have shown just what is achievable with vision and an innovative and collaborative approach.”

The project will now go on to compete against other regional winners at the national RICS Awards Grand Final on November 2 in London, for the chance to be crowned the overall UK winner in its category.
