New animation advises on flooding

A new animation has been produced to advise people on the steps to take to prepare in case of flooding.

The “Flood safety: be prepared” animation has been produced by local artist and Blackburn College graduate Ryan Hammond in partnership with Blackburn with Darwen Council and The Environment Agency.

An animated character in the film is told that that, whilst flooding is a distressing and unwanted worry, if your home is at risk there are steps you can take to prepare.

Those steps include assembling an emergency grab bag including a supply of water, canned food, a first aid kit, mobile phone and torch.

If bad weather is occurring and flooding is imminent, the animation explains how you should move valuable items upstairs along with furniture if it’s not too heavy. It also says not to leave pets tied up outside and check the TV and radio for updates as well the ‘BwDWeatherWatch’ Facebook page.

If your home is being flooded, the animation explains that steps to take include the production of makeshift sandbags and flood gates.

Councillor Mustafa Desai, Executive Member for Health and Adult Social Care, said:

This is a brilliant project that showcases some fantastic local artistic talent and provides vital information for our residents. We saw first-hand in East Lancashire at Christmas the devastation flooding can cause and want our residents to be as prepared as possible.
