Neighbourhoods come together to remember the Great War

Earlier this year the Council’s Your Call scheme made small grants of up to £200 available to groups to help them remember the sacrifices made by their communities 100 years ago.

Today the council is pleased to announce that all groups that applied for this funding were successful and many of them have already received these commemorative funds.

Amongst the successful applicants were the Residents of Sunnyhurst Association who in May held the first of many planned activities to commemorate the First World War within Sunnyhurst woods itself. The event included volunteers in period dress, live entertainment and music from the 1914 – 18 period.

Councillor Kate Hollern leader of Blackburn with Darwen borough Council said

“in this centennial year of the outbreak of war, it is really important that we all take time to stop and reflect on the sacrifices made by our communities 100 years ago. These groups that have come together to help commemorate the sacrifices of the Borough are credit to us all, and I and this council are proud to support these residents that will help us remember the events and actions of 1914.”

Almost all areas of the borough will have a Your Call First World War event taking place over the coming months. For further information on how to take part in any commemorative activity or to attend one please see the Council’s schedule of events here.
