The leader of Blackburn with Darwen Council, Councillor Mohammed Khan, has called for people to help keep the borough strong and united following the latest news from London.

A national minute’s silence was observed today as mark of respect and act of remembrance to the victims of the Grenfell Tower fire and flags at Blackburn and Darwen Town Hall are flying at half-mast .

Tomorrow (Tuesday, June 20) at 11am, the Council will take part in Armed Forces Day activity and there will be events outside both town halls. At both events the opportunity will be taken to allow people to reflect on the most recent new from London with a minutes silence.

Speaking about the latest terrorist attack in Finsbury Park and the loss of life following the fire, Councillor Mohammed Khan, leader of Blackburn with Darwen Council, said:

“We are all heartbroken about the fire which is clearly a national disaster. I’ve been hearing about people from the borough going down to do what they can to help.

“Our thoughts are with all those affected by the terrible attack in Finsbury Park.

“This Council is committed to help build community togetherness and we work with our partners, community groups and individuals to help bridge any gaps between communities.

“We have done a lot of work over the last few years to tackle hate crime and the cause of hate crime.”

“Events such as the Great Get Together at the weekend and Armed Forces Day, which takes place in the borough tomorrow, help build community togetherness; I hope as many people as possible can get down and take part.”
