Blackburn Hindu Centre is wishing everyone a Happy Diwali and inviting people to take part in its celebrations.

The centre is organising a special event and meal at Blackburn’s Maida Restaurant on Saturday, October 28 to celebrate Diwali which comes from the Sanskrit word Deepavali meaning ‘Cluster of Lights’.

The five day festival always falls between the last two weeks in October and the first two weeks in November.

This year, Diwali begins on Thursday, October 19.

Ashok Chudasama of Blackburn Hindu Centre, said:

Diwali is a major festival like Christmas.  It celebrates the victory of good over evil based on the Hindu epic of Ramayana which describes how thousands of years ago Lord Rama came home to Ayodhya in India after 14 years in exile.  The whole town was so delighted that every house lit candles, cleaned and decorated their properties and drew coloured rangoli patterns near their entrances in time for his coronation.

Today Hindus celebrate Diwali by getting together with friends and family and exchanging food and sweets.
