Blackburn’s Festival of Making has been shortlisted for a top tourism award after its first year.

It has been nominated as a finalist in the Large Tourism Event category of the Lancashire Tourism Awards.

Run by Marketing Lancashire, the event honours the best and brightest in the county, fro top restaurants, holiday parks to one-off events.

The Festival of Making was held for the first time in May this year in Blackburn Town # Centre and Cathedral Quarter, and drew in thousands of visitors

Over 30,000 people flock to Blackburn town centre to enjoy the celebration of makers and making.

Directed and produced by Wayne Hemingway MBE, HemingwayDesign, Deco Publique and Place Shakers, the festival was held in Blackburn thanks to its strong connection with manufacturing forged during the industrial revolution.

Visitors who came from all over the UK, enjoyed two days of demonstrations, workshops and performances as well as a collection of art installations, held at a variety of venues around the town centre include Blackburn Museum & Art Gallery and The Making Rooms.

Volunteers helped ensure the festival backed by Arts Council England, the Heritage Lottery Fund, Superslow Way and Blackburn with Darwen Council, ran smoothly by acting as visitor guides and welcoming people to the town.

The Lancashire Tourism Awards, now in its 14th year, takes place this year on Thursday, November 9th in the world famous, Blackpool Tower Ballroom, with headline sponsor University of Central Lancashire.

Councillor Mohammed Khan, Leader of Blackburn with Darwen Council, said:

The Festival of Making was a wonderful event for Blackburn, showcasing some of the best innovations in the area and bringing people from all over the country to the town. This nomination is richly deserved and I wish them every success at the ceremony in November.”

The black-tie event will take place at The Blackpool Tower Ballroom on Thursday, November 9th, and tickets are on sale for businesses and industry partners to buy online from lancashiretourismawards.com.
