Workforce development activity for all Social workers is targeted to meet the statutory, regulatory and business critical requirements of Adults & Children’s social work services. These are directed by government, national and regional drivers including:

  • Ofsted; Department for Education, Department of Health, National Directors workforce priorities
  • Health and Care Professions Council
  • Local Safeguarding Boards

The Professional Capabilities Framework and Knowledge and Skills are key standards that Social Workers need to work towards at each stage of their development, these underpin all practice.

At Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council we provide support for development at all levels:

NQSW/ Assessed and supported year in employment

  • On the job support and fortnightly formal reflective supervision for first 3 months (then monthly) including case management, professional development and Personal Development Planning
  • Less complex caseloads
  • Social Work Professional Development learning workshops
  • Advanced Practitioner forums, mentoring sessions and workshops
  • Safeguarding and other mandatory training as identified by Adults & Children’s services
  • Work shadowing, observational visits
  • Monthly mentor sessions, Peer group meetings
  • Development and support to meet ASYE learning outcomes

Social worker/ Experienced social worker

  • Monthly formal supervision, annual appraisal and Personal Development Planning
  • Social Work Professional Development learning workshops
  • Safeguarding and other mandatory training as identified by Adults & Children’s services
  • Work shadowing, observational visits
  • Post Qualifying training as part of a planned process linked to identified development needs
  • Practice Educator module as part of career progression
  • Development and support to meet Social Worker learning outcomes

Advanced practitioner

  • Monthly formal supervision, annual appraisal and Personal Development Planning
  • Social Work Professional Development learning workshops
  • Safeguarding and other mandatory training as identified by Adults & Children’s services
  • Work shadowing, observational visits
  • Post Qualifying training as part of a planned process linked to identified development needs
  • Practice Educator module as part of career progression
  • Workforce Development  and support to meet Advanced Practitioner learning outcomes

Team manager

  • Monthly formal supervision, annual appraisal and Personal Development Planning
  • Social Work Professional Development learning workshops
  • Safeguarding and other mandatory training as identified by Adults & Children’s services
  • Work shadowing, observational visits
  • Management training as identified by Adults & Children’s Services
  • Supervision training
  • Practice Educator training and support of students
  • Development and support to meet Social Work Manager learning outcomes

Research and development is extremely important to us, all Social Workers have access to a wide range of development options throughout their career with us. We are keen for practitioners and managers to share their learning with others and ultimately to support the next generation of Social Workers
